Tips & Tricks For the Perfect Horse Camping Adventure

Horse camping is one of the best ways to connect with nature while sharing the experience with your four-legged partner. At Bay Creek Ranch Campground in Southern Illinois, we welcome horse lovers of all kinds — from casual trail riders to seasoned campers — and we want your trip to be as smooth and memorable as possible.

Here are some helpful tips and tricks to make the most out of your next horse camping adventure:

1. Prepare Your Horse for the Trail

  • Make sure your horse is comfortable with trail riding basics (crossing water, uneven ground, riding with other horses).
  • Bring along familiar gear so your horse feels at ease in a new environment.
  • A few practice rides before your trip will build confidence for both you and your horse.

2. Pack Smart (for Both You & Your Horse)

  • For your horse: hay bags, water buckets, hose, first-aid kit, fly spray, muck forks for cleaning stalls/pens, and a secure halter/lead rope.
  • For you: weather-appropriate clothing, camping gear, sunscreen, bug spray, and plenty of snacks.
  • Don’t forget a mounting block if you need one — trails can be tricky!

4. Trail Etiquette

  • Be courteous to hikers and other riders you meet on the trails.
  • Leave no trace — pack out everything you bring in.
  • Ride at a pace that’s comfortable for your group, and don’t let your horse crowd others.

5. Have Fun & Explore

Southern Illinois is packed with beautiful trails, waterfalls, and scenic overlooks. From Jackson Falls to Bell Smith Springs, you’ll find plenty of breathtaking spots to enjoy with your horse.

Horse camping is more than just riding — it’s about the bond, the campfire stories, and the memories you’ll create along the way.

    1. You can do all your riding for a week from the campground. There are a lot of different trails we have access to. We have direct access to the Shawnee National Forest. You can ride a different trail every day. You might overlap a little but there are a lot of beautiful trails. We do have a stock trailer that we loan out if you would like to go to another area close by as well.
